After years of being inspired by such blogs as Sew Weekly (which unfortunately no longer exists), I have decided to take on the challenge of creating my very own full new wardrobe.
I have a passion for the 1940's and 1950's so I plan on basing my new wardrobe around that.
If you take a look at the pattern gallery (the link is to the right), you will see that I have patterns that span from the 1940's to now and both reprints and originals. I also have something that is not listed in the pattern gallery that is more than likely going to be the basis of the wardrobe I will make called the Lutterloh System. It's a German pattern making system that allows you to size any of their patterns to your custom measurements. I don't have the perfect body so I think this will work well for me.
Over the years I have collected several sets from this line as well. I have 1936 and 1938, 1941, 1945, 1954, 1955, 1969, 1980 and 2007. Each set has anywhere from 80 to 260 patterns in it so I could make a new outfit every week for the rest of my life if I chose to and still never run out.
The 1954 set is complete and has so many patterns to chose from that I hardly even know where to begin, but this is the set that I believe that I am going to mainly use.
Although I am not going to follow the one outfit a week rule because maybe I will feel ambitious one week and make two and maybe another week I will get frustrated and not make anything at all. However, a rule that I am going to follow is a 1 in 1 out rule. which means that for every outfit that I make (an outfit will be either a dress or a shirt and skirt, ect.) I will be donating an outfit that I already owned to charity.
By my birthday (July 30th) next year I hope to have a reasonable sized made by me wardrobe of vintage clothing. I do have some skirts and 1 dress that I made in the past to tide me over until more is completed. But I consider a full wardrobe to be 7 house dresses, 4 work outfits. (Right now we are working from home but at some point I may need to go back into the office.) 2 winter coat dresses for shopping and visiting. 3 pairs of pajamas, 2 slips, 2 bras, 6 pairs of underwear (yes I have patterns for these).
I live in the northeast so we have very long, very cold winters so the clothing that I am going to start with, I'm going to try to make them out of warmer materials just for practicality. I do have one heavy navy skirt with pearl buttons that I am wearing right now and it feels like I'm wearing a blanket.
Lastly, just a little about me, I am in my late 30s, I live in Pennsylvania with my husband of 9 years and our adorable 8 year old Schnoodle in a ranch style house that was built in 1955 so pretty perfect if you ask me. I work for a relatively large company that as I said before they are allowing us to work from home for right now so the whole housewife thing is going to be easier.
Please enjoy reading about my sewing adventures. Maybe I can even teach someone something through my trial and error.
